Midvaal 19 June Event 3 of the 2010 Championship
Following a tumultous 2 weeks after some heated discussions on rules and technical matters at last the race weekend arrived with a very cold cold front at Midvaal.
Confusion reigned supreme when it was realised that the programme and actual final instructions differed and all drivers realised on the morning that they qualify at 07h20 and not 08h40 as per programme.
Everybody rushed to get out with cold engines and Louis vd Merwe promptly re-alligned his left rear wheel as he left his pit. Yep Louis these cars do not turn the same as the BMW but I am sure you will be ready for the next race weekend.
The track was so bitterly cold that for sure it would be easier in the rain at Zwartkops than at 0 deg ambient at Midvaal.
It was amazing that Olivier, Matthys and Corrie managed times of below 1min 9 secs in that conditions.
Race 1 saw Olivier and Matthys dissapear into the distance with Lushen breathing down their necks and Corrie chasing hard had a spin entering the pit straight after lap 1 and then subsequent contact with a Formula Ford which rendered his efforts nul and void.
Lushen then had a failure of a suspension part when he was lying 2nd and looking at Mathys Strydom’s gearbox serial number. This thinned the field out to only 4 finishers.
For race 2 there were 6 Gtis on the grid and Olivier and Matthys had a serious battle at the front with Corrie again chasing very hard when his engine cover came off. Soon after he had misfires on the engine due to plug leads making bad contact and he had to retire which he promptly did by parking his car very close to the barriers after turn 5.
Elna’s new Hans device de-activated the kill switch and put her car out of action on lap 1 and Lushen had a stuck wide open throttle and had to retire also on lap 1.
This then left only 3 finishers to the 2nd race which Olivier deservedly won with Matthys being 2nd.
The retirements once again reminded everybody that proper car preparation and the ability to go as fast as you can with what you have in terms of a race car on the day and most importantly get to the finish line will keep you in the running for the championship. Any championship is normally decided between 2 or 3 top cars and drivers in the championship no matter how big the field. This year we are very lucky despite our low entry numbers to have so many as 5 top drivers with the ability to beat each other in our small field and this is still going to be a hectic 2010 championship.
